A/N: So it all comes down to this. The next chapter is going to be the last one, and then there’s going to be the epilogue. Also, the final chapter will be split into two and won’t be out for about two weeks, since I’ll be away. Sorry? BUT! Here’s the kicker. This isn’t the end of OWAF. Nope, it’s just the beginning, loves.
You’ll find out more in the next chapter, yeah? Until then, I hope you enjoy this chapter and all it’s fluffiness! ^^
It was the sunlight that tickled the Lynx on the bed awake that late Saturday morning.
Louis had found himself curled up on his side with nothing but the arms of the familiar Wolf wrapped around him, Harry’s front pressed warmly to his back as he breathed steadily at the back of his neck. Sighing contentedly, Louis tightened his hold on the Wolf’s arms, curling up tighter as the beginning of a smile started to curl at his lips.
Harry had kept true to his word for the past few days and had taken care of Louis, only ever leaving his side to either cook for their neglected bellies, or when he needed the bathroom. Harry had been nothing but sweet and attentive to Louis, working him through his heat, the excess pheromones Louis’ body kept emitting increasing the Wolf’s own near insatiable appetite.
At first Louis had been nervous about it, shy about opening up his body for Harry to see and have after their first time in bed together, and also afraid that Harry would leave him once the deed was done.
Louis remembered waking up the morning after in a state of panic when he had felt nothing but empty sheets next to him, his heat induced mind dulling his senses and so he missed the scent of Harry lingering in his apartment and had promptly broken down. After just a few short moments of sobbing and trying to push the burning in his body aside, the bedroom door had burst open and revealed a wide eyed Harry, who as soon as had seen the crying Lynx had gathered him into his arms and soothed him with soft caresses and words of endearment.
Louis remembered hiccoughing in embarrassment and trying to push the Wolf away, not wanting to expose his vulnerable side, but Harry had been adamant and held onto him, shaking his head and whispering how he understood and it was okay to be afraid. After that, Harry had taken to reassuring Louis by taking him again, sweet words of endearment constantly being whispered in his ear and wandering hands touching every inch of skin on Louis’ body.
Throughout their time together, Harry had stayed by his side and worked him through the his heat, always so reassuring and always so loving.
Louis had never felt so loved and treasured before in his life.
His heat had finally broken a few hours ago, and he remembered how much his body seemed to sing with warmth and affection when Harry had stayed buried in him after, playfully refusing to let go. Louis had chosen to burrow deeper into Harry’s embrace instead of fighting with him on it, leading to one last time together, which had been incited by Louis playfully rolling his hips. The two had finally fallen asleep after, with Harry wrapping his arms securely around Louis’ waist and sleepily kissing him at the back his neck.
Louis hummed softly as he traced mindless patterns on the warm skin of Harry’s arms, his chest feeling so full and whole for the first time in months. It just felt so good. Ears perking when he heard Harry’s breathing regulate into one of an awake person, Louis smiled when he felt the arms around him tighten as Harry dropped a kiss to the back of his head.
“Good morning kitten.”
Burying his head in the juncture of Louis’ neck, Harry softly kissed his mark on the Lynx before sighing, rubbing his cheek against the others. Sighing contentedly, Louis turned his head and chastely pecked Harry on the cheek before pulling away, taking in Harry’s dishevelled curls and bright green eyes.
“Good morning curly.”
Dropping a quick kiss onto Louis’ lips, Harry wrinkled his nose.
“Urgh.. Morning breath.”
Rolling his eyes, Louis nipped at the tip of Harry’s nose before pulling out of his arms. Sitting up with his legs dangling off the edge of the bed, Louis stretched his limbs, relishing in the sound of his joints popping. Rolling his head from side to side, Louis turned his head and froze when he saw Harry staring at him intently, head propped up by his hand as he leaned to the side, arm bent at the elbow.
Shaking his head, Harry smirked before sitting up himself and twisting his torso a little from side to side to stretch himself, pretending not to notice the way Louis was staring as his muscles shifted under his skin.
Biting his lower lip, Louis slid off the bed and tried not to cringe at how cold the floor tiles felt under the soles of his feet.
“Where are you going, kitten?”
Turning to face Harry, Louis gestured at his body.
“To the bathroom to take a shower, of course. If you haven’t noticed, I kind of need it. I bet I reek of you.”
“And how is that a bad thing?”
“I prefer the way I smell, thank you very much.”
“Well, I prefer how you smell too, kitten.”
Louis chuckled and started walking towards his bathroom.
“Good to know, curly- Ack! Not this again!”
Louis wiggled as Harry laughed, having swung the Lynx into the cradle of his arms.
“You see kitten, I need a shower too, and I’m sure you won’t mind sharing now, would you?”
Blushing, Louis allowed Harry to carry him to the bathroom, arms clinging onto Harry’s neck.
“At this rate, I’m going to smell of you forever.”
“And that’s just the way I like it.”
Plopping the Lynx onto the counter, Harry proceeded to adjust the shower’s temperature and let it run while Louis brushed his teeth. Grabbing at the toothbrush Louis had managed to dig out for him to use, Harry started to brush at his teeth just as Louis rinsed and spat into the sink.
Examining his teeth for a moment in the mirror, Louis nodded in approval before pressing a quick kiss at the no-so-frothy corner of Harry’s mouth and jumped into the shower, moaning at how good the pressure of the shower’s blast felt on his slightly sore muscles.
Shaking his head as he watched Louis dance about in the shower, Harry spat and rinsed his own mouth before joining him in the shower, hands gripping at the more delicate hips of the man in the shower. Kissing Louis on the nose, which caused the Lynx to wrinkle it cutely, Harry took hold of the bottle of shampoo at the side and squeezed out the liquid, lathering it up for a bit before rubbing it into Louis’ scalp, careful not to press on too hard around his pointed ears.
Louis closed his eyes, enjoying the sensation of Harry’s fingers massaging his scalp and let slip a moan of pleasure. Harry froze for a moment, ears twitching at the sound Louis made, before carrying on. Feeling particularly naughty, Louis let loose another moan a few moments later, laughing on the inside at the way that Harry’s pulse started to race and the quick breath of intake.
Turning around, his tail “accidentally” brushing against Harry’s semi, Louis looked up at Harry from under his long eye lashes.
“Everything alright curly?”
Growling, Harry narrowed his eyes at Louis’ feigned innocent expression. Quickly, but carefully, manoeuvring the the Lynx’s body, Harry pushed Louis against the wet tiled wall and pressed the hard planes of his torso against the sightly softer one of Louis’, face pressed down to the side of his face. Rumbling at the fact that he wasn’t the only one sporting a semi when he rolled his hips against Louis’, Harry smirked, eyes flashing.
“You a right little tease, aren’t you kitten?”
After staying the shower together till the water ran cold and Louis was covered with even more love bites and finger-shaped bruises, the two had pulled on their clothes, Louis lending Harry a pair of loose sweatpants and tee, and made their way to the kitchen where Harry started to prepare for them some breakfast.
As Harry puttered around the kitchen, complaining a little at the how much food Louis had left in his house, Louis fiddled around with the ancient radio set he had on the bar counter before gathering the things he needed to make them tea.
Setting the boiler to reheat the water, Louis put the tea bags into the mugs before hopping onto the counter top, swinging his legs as he watched Harry slice some tomatoes in half and fry them up.
Louis liked how domesticated everything felt, the way that Harry seemed to catch onto Louis’ likes and dislikes and vice versa, how the two of them seemed to adapt to the other and look after each other in their own way. Louis especially liked how Harry seemed to love looking after him, treating him like something that was priceless and worth keeping, not to be set aside on a pedestal to admire or just be thrown aside once he got bored.
It was all just so.. Nice.
Breaking out of his thoughts once he heard Harry cut the stove’s gas off, Louis hopped of the counter top and prepared the tea for the both of them.
Two teaspoons of sugar and a little cream for Harry, and just cream for Louis.
Carrying the two mugs to the dining table outside, he set them down and sat down, watching Harry as he brought out the plates laden with food, extra tomatoes for Louis. Sitting in the chair next to Louis, Harry slid the plate over to Louis and the two tucked into their meal, the low sound of the radio and their munching taking over the apartment.
Popping a bit of bacon into his mouth, Harry was cutting up his eggs when he started bantering with Louis, both exchanging tales of their lives as they ate, sinking into a comfortable mood. After clearing the dishes and refilling their mugs, Louis pulled Harry to the couch to watch some telly, not wanting the Wolf to leave their peaceful solitude just yet.
Curling up against the Wolf, Louis absentmindedly watched the programme that was being broadcast as Harry held his hands, playing with his fingers and bringing them up to his mouth to kiss them every now and then.
Again, Louis was struck by how domesticated and homey it felt. Louis had never felt so warm and protected before, and somehow Harry just felt so right, like he was filling up the hole that Eleanor had left in him.
It wouldn’t be so bad being with the Wolf, now would it? Just let him court you, silly kit.
“Yeah, maybe I should..”
“What was that, Louis?”
Stiffening a little, Louis blinked. Had he unknowingly spoken aloud?
Heh.. Silly boy.
Clearing his throat, Louis tangled his fingers tighter around Harry’s.
“Er.. I said thank you. For everything that you’ve done for me.”
Smiling, Harry pulled the Lynx closer to him, bumping his nose against Louis’ cheek.
“A promise is a promise, and I did mean it when I said that I would take care of you, Louis.”
Louis blushed, curling even deeper into Harry’s warm embrace, tail twining together with the Wolf’s.
“Yeah.. Thank you Harry.”
Liam was walking through the bookshop, fingertips brushing against spines of the books lining the shelves as he scanned the titles on display, brows furrowed in concentration as he searched for that one book that he wanted to read.
He had finally managed to gather his wits and leave his house when it was clear that he needed to stop moping and mooning about what had happened and get out of the house. So far he had managed to attend the hybrid council’s weekly meeting with no incident and also been able to complete his examination and notes on the meeting’s minutes.
Unfortunately, Zayn was still in his thoughts.
It undoubtedly felt weird, strange and just plain wrong that something that they had shared in the heat of the moment, out of nothing but anger-driven lust had managed to wedge itself so deeply into Liam’s mind.
It was driving him crazy.
The guilt of having done so whilst technically still being in a courtship with Niall was also constantly gnawing at the back of his mind. Liam had been feeling anxious about Niall’s answer before Saturday’s incident, but now, Liam felt as if he needed time to think for himself.
It wasn’t that Liam didn’t want Niall anymore. On the contrary, he still wanted Niall all to himself, to be able to hold onto him and not lose to that damned Wolf but at the same time, he no longer felt worthy enough to do so.
Not that he hadn’t already before because of what he had done before that.
Sighing, Liam shook his head to clear it of all negative thoughts.
He hadn’t come out to mope and over think again. He had come out to unwind and forget it all, which seemed to be failing spectacularly.
Finally managing to locate the book in question, Liam slid it out of the shelf’s tight clutch of books and walked over to one of the cosy reading corners tucked away at the back of the shop.
Hopefully some new reading material would help distract his mind from pretty blondes and roguish Wolves.
Zayn had been wandering around town looking for inspiration for his latest art commission, having been kicked out of the loft for “stinking up the place with his cloud of angst”, as Cher had so aptly put.
It wasn’t his fault that he couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened for the past few weeks.
Raking his fingers through his unmade hair, Zayn stopped moving when he caught a whiff of a familiar scent.
Furrowing his eyebrows, Zayn went against the voice in his head and instead pursued the scent, following the faint traces of it to a secluded shop at the obscure corner of a street. Wrinkling his nose for a moment, Zayn shrugged to himself before pushing into the shop, faintly noting the faint sound of the bell overhead signalling his entry. Looking around, Zayn took in the slightly musty shop and it’s ancient wooden shelves tightly stocked with books both old and new.
This was an interesting bookshop, and it’s quiet charm certainly appealed to his taste.
Walking quietly, Zayn noticed that there was barely anyone there, aside from the odd Fox couple at the register exchanging heart eyes and the old man looking through dusty tomes one opposite end. Zayn carried on moving before finally stopping in front of a familiar Husky, the corner of his lips twitching a little at the sight before him.
Bent over an open book on his lap, Liam was reading intently, a sizeable portion of the book already read through, his forehead puckered a little and his lips pursed in concentration.
Creeping silently forward, Zayn cringed when his foot kicked into a stack of old books at the side, causing Liam to break out of his reverie and look up in surprise as Zayn hurried to right the stack.
“Malik? What are you doing here?”
Clearing his throat, Zayn hastily replied.
“I, er- Saw the place and thought it looked really interesting with all the books on display and stuff.”
Frowning, Liam cocked his head to the side.
“The display window’s been shuttered for months now, so there’s nothing to see.”
Coughing, Zayn had to control himself to not smack his forehead.
Eyeing Zayn warily for a moment, Liam made to carry on reading while Zayn tried to catch his bearings. He was about to just up and leave when noticed the way that Liam’s cheeks were a little pink and his fingers seemed to clutch a little tighter at the book. Smirking, Zayn felt the predator in him rise a little.
Cute little thing, isn’t he?
Zayn stalked forward, squatting in front of Liam as he pressed his hands on the Husky’s knees, eyes bright with mischief when he noted Liam’s cheeks redden just a fraction more.
Now this was interesting.
Sighing in exasperation after trying to ignore the way that Zayn was staring at him, Liam looked back at him.
“What do you want, Wolf?”
Sputtering at Zayn’s answer, Liam slammed the book shut and tried to stand up, face now flaming red.
“Right, well- I have to go.”
Nudging the flustered Husky back onto the plush seat, Zayn leaned down, crowding Liam into the seat as the Husky seemed to bite back a whimper, causing the smirk on Zayn’s face to widen.
“And where are you going, pup?”
“Home. A- and don’t call me that!”
Chuckling, Zayn brought up a hand and traced Liam’s blush-warm cheeks as he blinked up at the Wolf, eyes clouded with confusion.
“Let me walk you home. The street just isn’t safe for adorable puppies like you.”
The bedroom was in a strewn mess, clothes thrown about in a haphazard mess and a few boxes turned over here and there. Huffing a little, Harry sat in the middle of his messed up room, propping his head on his palm as he thought hard.
Where on earth had he put that little necklace again?
Rubbing his face, he groaned before flopping down onto the floor. Of all the times for him to lose the one thing he treasured, it had to be now when Harry was so sure of what he wanted to do.
Harry had arrived back home about two hours ago, after having spent the day with Louis curled up in his lap and just enjoying the quiet of the moment with him, only ever exchanging a few words when they felt like it.
It was nice how comfortable and familiar it had all felt, and Harry had barely been able to peel himself away from Louis later when lunch time had rolled over and he could hear the way Louis’ stomach was growling a little, despite the Lynx’s embarrassed attempts at trying to conceal it.
The Wolf had taken to preparing a quick lunch, mac and cheese with a little bit of bacon in it, and back on the couch they had gone, with Louis flicking off bits of flaky crust once he had finished eating his share.
Louis’ actions had led to a little bit of a tussle between them, with the two of them rolling about on the floor trying to nip at each other until Louis had somehow managed to straddle Harry, his eyes bright and tail swaying about lazily. Gripping Louis’ smaller hips, Harry had smiled fondly at the triumphant Lynx as he had taken to bragging about how he was stronger than Harry, which the Wolf had proceeded to prove him wrong by rolling him right over and caging him under his body.
The way Louis had gaped at him in surprise had been nothing short of adorable.
Kissing the breath out of Louis had been fun, and the way that the two of them had laced their fingers together and the way that Louis had tried to twine their tails together had felt so sweet and wonderful.
In that moment Louis just felt like home really, and it was that very moment that Harry found himself having to hold back the need to just ask Louis to let him court him.
But he couldn’t do that. He didn’t want Louis to see it as Harry asking him in the heat of the moment, especially without a token to give.
So here Harry was, in the middle of his messed up room, grumbling a little under his breath thinking about where on earth his necklace could be, when a head poked out from around his door, ears twitching inquisitively.
“Harry, you looking for- Okay, you’re definitely looking for something.”
Giving Cher a mock withering glare, Harry replied sarcastically.
“Really? Whatever gave you that idea?”
Cher rolled eyes and crossed the threshold, carefully stepping over the scattered lumps of clothes and upturned boxes. Squatting next to her Alpha, Cher wrinkled her nose.
“Well Harry, maybe if you told me what you were looking for, I could help you. I mean, obviously two pairs of eyes would be better than one, eh?”
Sighing, Harry sat up and ruffled his curls for a bit before waving around at the mess he had made.
“I’m looking for that necklace my mum gave me, the one that’s been in the family for generations. I know that put in here somewhere. It should have been in that little velvet box, but for some reason I just can’t seem to find it.”
“Oh! You mean the one with the three rings interlocked together?”
“Yeah, that one.”
“You told us to get that cleaned and polished for you remember?”
Harry blinked, confused.
“I- I did?”
“Actually no, you didn’t. But Danielle and I knew that you’d need it done soon what with that pretty looking Lynx coming into the picture.”
Raising his brows, Harry stared at a grinning Cher.
“And why would you think that?”
“It’s pretty obvious how far gone you are for him H, especially since you went through the trouble of claiming him and introducing him to us. No surprise that you’d want to present that necklace to him as your exchange token. Now, let me be a good girl and fetch it for you, eh? I think Dani said something about it being delivered back yesterday and putting it in her drawer for safe keeping.”
Smiling at the brunette, Harry curled his tail around her ankle fondly.
“Thank you Cher.”
Niall was walking over to Liam’s place, his face set in a mask of determination, but underneath it all, he felt a little scared and afraid at what he was about to do. He wasn’t sure if the decision he was about to make was the best one for him, but it certainly was the best for all three of them.
Or so he’d like to think.
He’d been going over multiple scenarios in his head countless times over the past few days, what would happen if he chose Liam? What would happen if he chose Zayn? And honestly, it pained him to have to choose, but choose he did.
Like he said, it wasn’t the happiest choice, and he knew no one was going to be happy with it, but in the long run, it was still the best one.
Stepping out of the lift, Niall walked up to the Liam’s door, fist raised and poised to knock on the door, hesitating for a moment.
What would he say?
Would Liam get mad get him?
Would Liam approve?
Would Liam still want to hold him and tell him that everything was okay?
Swallowing the lump in his throat, Niall shut his eyes and was about to knock on the door when he paused, noticing the way that the door wasn’t completely shut.
That wasn’t like Liam. Liam was usually very careful and cautious. He would never just leave is door ajar or unlocked, even when he knew that Niall was coming over. That was the main reason why he had given Niall the spare key to his flat.
Blinking, Niall pushed at the door, hearing the click of the catch as the door slid open. Padding into the flat silently, Niall rounded the corner, picking up the book that had been carelessly been discarded on the floor. Frowning, Niall turned the book over as he walked into the living room, but dropped it as soon as his eyes connected with the sight before him startling the two boys heavily making out on the couch.
“.. Zayn? Li?”
